Kilbirnie 2 Clydebank 1

CLYDEBANK fell to their fifth defeat of the season as Kilbirnie came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Valefield on Saturday afternoon.

Ciaran Lafferty’s header put the visitors in front but two goals in two minutes from Reece Williamson saw Blasties fight back to secure all three points.

The result means Bankies continue to sit bottom of the Super Premier Division with a solitary point from their opening six games, two points adrift of next opponents Cumnock.

Bankies boss Kieran McAnespie made two changes to the side that drew with Arthurlie, with Chris Black making his first league start while Ciaran Lafferty replaced Scott Miller as the lone striker.

Former Bankies chairman Gordon Robertson was in the opposite dugout in manager Budgie McGhie’s absence and it was the home side who threatened early on. Clydebank goalkeeper Josh Lumsden’s attempted clearance ricocheted off James Finlay and narrowly wide as Blasties went in search of the opener.

Just after the half hour mark, Clydebank had claims for a penalty after Johnny Allan appeared to be caught by Finlay but referee David Dickinson waved away the protests.

Another former Bankie – winger Peter McGill – was next to threaten as he weaved his way through the Clydebank defence but his tame effort was comfortably held by Lumsden in the only real chance of the first period.

Midfielder Ryan Deas created the first chance of the second period, with his looping effort being tipped over the bar as Clydebank got closer to breaking the deadlock.

Five minutes later, Bankies did take the lead – having scored first on only two other occasions this season. A swift, passing counter attack saw the ball worked to right back David Verlaque, whose cross was inch perfect for Ciaran Lafferty to rise and thump home a header past Blasties stopper Joe Wilton.

But midway through the second period, Ladeside equalised. Jon Scullion’s cross from the right found Reece Williamson unmarked inside the area and the midfielder glanced home his first of the afternoon.

And less than two minutes later, Williamson had his second. After a surging run from Anderson, Scullion lifted the ball over the Bankies back line to Finlay, who fizzed his effort across goal with Williamson on hand to slam the ball home at the back post after a late run into the box.

On the stroke of full time Bankies nearly grabbed an equaliser as Alan Vezza’s looping header was cleared off the line by Williamson as Blasties held on for the three points.
