CLYDEBANK twice came from behind to draw 2-2 with Girvan at Holm Park on Saturday.
Goals in either half from Josh Watt and Jordan Shelvey saw Bankies grab a point as Kieran McAnespie’s side continue to sit second bottom of the Super Premier Division.
McAnespie made four changes to the side that lifted the Sectional League Cup, replacing himself with captain Alan Vezza who returned from injury to make his 100th appearance for the club.
It was a poor start for the home side, who gifted Girvan the opener after four minutes. Johnny Allan was dispossessed in midfield with Robert Paterson burying his effort at the second attempt after his initial shot was parried back into his path by Lumsden.
It was the seventh time Bankies have conceded first in a game this season but it seemed to spark a revival as the home side went in search of the equaliser.
Watt burst down the left channel and bamboozled Girvan full back Stephen Auld with quick feet before darting for the byline – nutmegging Auld in the process. There were a lack of options in the middle for Watt, whose cut back to the penalty spot was cleared.
Bankies continued with a high press and could’ve been level when David Verlaque’s cross from the right was met by the head of Shelvey, but the top goalscorer skewed his header well wide of the target.
Girvan were dangerous on the break and should’ve doubled their lead after 20 minutes when Jamie Darroch slipped which allowed Paterson through on goal, but Lumsden was out quickly to thwart a second.
As the first half drew to a close, Darroch almost levelled in the most spectacular of circumstances. A corner from the right was floated to the edge of the area where Darroch’s flying scissor kick crashed off the crossbar and bounced to safety.
But Bankies did level before the break when Jordan Shelvey was upended inside the area, with referee Ryan Oliver pointing to the spot. Josh Watt assumed responsibility and coolly slotted the ball into the top left hand corner.
It was a similar tale in the second period, with Bankies losing another goal inside the opening five minutes of the half. From a throw in on the half way line, Girvan counter attacked once again with the ball breaking to Craig Reid to stab home past Lumsden.
With a quarter of an hour to play, Shelvey grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck to score his tenth goal of the season. Bringing the ball down on the left of the area, the striker smashed his strike through a crowd of bodies with the ball nestling in the corner.
And Bankies thought they’d snatched all three points in the dying seconds when Reece Pearson bundled home from close range after Watt’s effort was saved, but the assistant’s flagged ruled it offside as Clydebank settled for a point.
