Bankies crash out of Junior Cup to Kennoway Star Hearts

Clydebank lost two goals in the final minutes as they crashed out of the Scottish Junior Cup with a 3-2 defeat to Kennoway Star Hearts on Saturday.

Bankies twice led through Jordan Shelvey but goals from Kieran Band, Mark Partridge and Mathew Gay saw the Fife side fight back to inflict Clydebank’s seventh loss of the season.

Bankies boss Kieran McAnespie made four changes from the side that lost 4-0 to Pollok, with Chris Dooley, Andy Paterson, Ross Forsyth and Jordan Shelvey all starting in a 3-5-2 formation.

After an even opening half hour, the hosts were awarded a penalty when Jamie Darroch was penalised for a push inside the area. Josh Lumsden read it well and made an excellent save from Gay’s spot kick to ensure it was goalless at the break.

McAnespie made a tactical switch at the break, with Josh Watt replacing Andy Paterson as Bankies reverted to a 4-3-3 with Ross Forsyth moving to left back.

And within ninety seconds Bankies were awarded a penalty when Phil Johnston was hauled down just inside the area, with referee Stewart Luke pointing to the spot. Jordan Shelvey grabbed the ball and calmly slotted home his eighth goal of the season

Star should’ve been level soon after when a sweeping counter attacking saw the ball drilled across the area, but Gay blasted the ball high over the bar from all of two yards.

It was a big let off for McAnespie’s men but they were soon caught out again when Band capitalised on sloppy defensive play to knock the ball past Lumsden to level.

Bankies regrouped to go ahead on the hour mark. A comedy of errors saw Johnston’s initial effort spilled by Star stopper Paterson, with Shelvey on hand to tap in his second of the afternoon after the defence failed to recover.

But with six minutes remaining it was a familiar tale as the visitors failed to clear their lines and Partridge drew Star level for the second time.

And less than two minutes later, Kennoway struck the winner. Forsyth was punished for sloppy play inside the area and was dismissed for his second yellow card, with referee Stewart Luke pointing to the spot.

Mathew Gay assumed responsibility for the second time, with Lumsden pulling off another fine save before Gay atoned for his two spot kick misses to smash home the rebound and secure Star’s spot in the third round.
